The Amsler grid eye test
…is a safe and simple, self-administered screening test used to evaluate possible problem areas in the macula. It is most commonly used by patients with or suspected of having macular degeneration. Early detection is important because the worse macular degeneration gets, and the larger the area of leakage (in cases of “wet” macular degeneration) becomes, the more difficult the disease is to treat. This is why you should learn how to use the Amsler Grid eye test. If you don’t have a grid, bookmark this page and come to visit any time you want to test yourself. Or, simply print this page out and use it daily.
Instructions
Cover one eye and note the dot in the center. While keeping your eye trained on the dot, notice the lines which cross over the rest of the box. Ask yourself the following questions:
Are you able to see the corners and sides of the square? Do you see any wavy lines? Are there any holes or missing areas? Repeat this test on your other eye. If the lines are bent or missing you may have a vision problem in that eye and you should schedule an appointment with your retinal specialist for a dilated eye exam.
