41% decrease in the incidence of macular degeneration… using B-vitamins
In a seven-year cardiovascular disease trial involving more than 5,200 women over the age of 40, folic acid, B-6 and B-12 vitamins were given daily to half the subjects. The other half were given a placebo. The group who received the vitamins ended up with a 41% decrease in the incidence of macular degeneration.
All the women in the trial reported that they did not have macular degeneration at the study’s start. Even though the study involved only women, the researchers say, the findings probably apply to all elderly people, regardless of gender.
The amount of B-vitamins to take has yet to be determined. These study results suggest the use of B-6 and B-12 as a preventative measure will be researched in a more thorough and rigorous format.
